1. On August 10,1931, Arthur Whitcomb started this Company by borrowing $1000
from his Sunday School teacher for a down payment on his first power shovel.
He operated the shovel himself and after two years, the shovel was paid for.
2. He bid his first Road Job in 1932 ...his bid was accepted and the job was in
Wilmington, Vermont.
3. In 1933, he bought his second shovel and built the Company's first sand & gravel
plant off the Branch Road in South Keene.
4. He took up flying and purchased his first airplane in 1936 planes have always
been a big asset in our business.
5.By 1938 the Company had eight shovels that worked around the clock to clean up
tons of debris left by the Hurricane. This was a big lift to the Company after
suffering thru the depression.
6. The Company became involved in the mining of Mica during World War II. The Mica
was trucked from mines in Gilsum and Alstead to a Shop at 135 Water Street where
20 -25 girls processed the mica so it could be sold to the government. At the
close of the operation, the Company was the largest producer of mica in the
Northeast.
7. In 1942, the Company started the manufacturing of concrete ~locks as a one man
operation, producing 200 blocks a day. Today, we have an automatic plant that
produces 1000 blocks per hour.
8. In 1946, the first ready mix concrete plant was started in Keene and the office
was moved from Water Street to our present location at 725 Main Street.
9. In 1948, the second Ready Mix plant was built in Peterborough and supplied the concrete for the MacDowel Dam.
10. In 1951 Tilton Sand & Gravel was started.
11.1953 --Charlestown Ready Mix was started
12.1957 --Lebanon Crushed Stone and our Brattleboro Block & masonry supply outlet
was opened. ,.
13.1959 --Newport Ready Mix Plant was started
14.1961 --Robert Whitcomb joins the firm full time upon graduation from UNH
15.1961 --Campton Sand & Gravel was started
16.1962 --Ready mix concrete was delivered to the Magic Mountain Ski Area with the
aid of a helicopter...first time ever done.
17.1964 --Twin Mountain Sand & Gravel was started
18.1967 --Built addition to Office at 725 Main Street and Lebanon
Crushed Stone Quarry was started
19.1968 --Conway Sand (. Gravel was started
20.1971 -Arthur Whitcomb retires and Robert Whitcomb becomes President
21.1971 -Gorham Sand (. Grave1.was acquired
22.1973 -Miramar Rock Plant was started in Miramar, Florida, which is
located just outside of Hollywood, Florida
23.1974 -Westmoreland Crushed Stone Quarry was started and another addition
to the Keene Office was built
24. 1976 -Universal Drilling (. Blasting Co. was started
25 -1977 -New ready mix plant is built in Peterboro off Route 202 and our
Lebanon Block Plant was acquired
26.1978 --Miller Ready Mix Plant in Lebanon is acquired which also gave us
plants in Bradford and Randolph, Vermont
27.1981 --Arthur Whitcomb,Inc. celebrates 50 years in business
28.1983 --Second Crushing Plant is added in Miramar, Florida
29.1984 --Masonry Supply Outlet is started in Montpelier, Vt.
30.1985 -86 --second story addition built at Keene Block Plant Office
31.1986 --Arthur Whitcomb died June 11,1986
